A dental crown is a type of full-coverage dental restoration in terms of fully caping its foundation i.e tooth or dental implant. Whenever a crown is placed to a natural tooth, It serves to restore its stiffness, shape, colour and function. Dental crowns can be made from many materials, which are usually fabricated using indirect methods. They are used to improve the strength and appearance of teeth. A dental crown is typically bonded to its foundation abutment.

In areas with high aesthetic expectations, as in upper front maxilla or lower front mandible, metal-free systems are the optimum choice mainly addressing e-max, Empress II and zirconia (zirconium oxide).

Dental Crowns – Indications

Partial-coverage prostheses i.e. veneers and onlays, are minimally invasive and versatile in terms of predictability, function and aesthetics. Hence, unless already over-prepared, compromised teeth can be restored with veneers/onlays in almost 95% of the cases. Crowns are nowadays regarded as invasive and only employed in cases as to:
  • Restore endodontically treated teeth
  • Protect roots with post and cores
  • Restore teeth that cannot be treated with veneers or onlays

All-Porcelain Systems&CAD/CAM Digital Fabrication
Digital fabrication (CAD/CAM) can either employ 3D printing, laser sintering or milling of solid porcelain blocks. Inlays, onlays, porcelain veneers and all varieties of dental crowns can either be fabricated with CAD/CAM technology or in dental laboratory setting. Typically, all-ceramic restorations are made out of feldspathic porcelains, leucite, zirconia or pressed ceramics in a dental laboratory. However, CAD/CAM technology can allow for the immediate, same-day delivery of these restorations.

The digital CAD/CAM route enhances fitting to the foundation tooth/implant. Unlikely,the analogue route ,i.e. lab, may involve distortion of the final restoration.

Crowns are also applied over implants. In such cases implant-supported crowns are the state-of-the-art solution in order to restore an edentulous (toothless) area not only in terms of function, but also of natural appearance.
