1 Day Dental Therapies
One-day dental therapies comprise prosthetic modalities, that aim to restore patients in a day. That concept is fully viable and is applied in every rehabilitation from one tooth up to a full implant reconstruction.
1-day therapies with definite composite veneers
Whenever all natural teeth are present, composite veneers can predictably restore shape and colour and serve as definitive rehabilitation
1-day therapies with implant-supported temporary crowns/bridges
Whenever natural teeth are missing, implants can be placed and subsequently be restored with same-day fixed prostheses (see: implants)
1-day therapies with tooth supported temporary crowns/bridges
Whenever few natural teeth are remaining, temporary crowns/bridges can accommodate the functional and aesthetic requirements of the prosthetic patient
Why Are Transitional/Temporary Restorations So Essential
- Transitional/Temporary restorations preserve the aesthetic and functional continuity. They serve their versatile purpose during fabrication of the final restorations (veneers, crowns, bridges)
- They protect teeth-abutments from bacteria and prevent tooth-sensitivities
- They facilitate immediate rehabilitation (teeth same-day)
- They confirm the shape, contour and position of the ”new dentition” produced by Aesthetic Analysis and Digital Smile Design.
- Their major role is repairability, thus minor to extensive modifications can be made easily, if needed. Material of choice is acrylic resin/synthetic resin
- Excessive mastication forces, such as applied by bruxers (individuals who clench or grind their teeth), are imponderables. They cause serious complications to the prosthetic restorations, the teeth & the Tempo-mandibular Joints . Trial period of some months with acrylic transitional restorations is necessary, so that all factors be promptly evaluated.
- Transitionals/Temporaries restore or preserve mastication (chewing), as well as help visualize the shape, position and color of the final restoration.
- Temporaries can be modified easily, the final goal being all lines & proportions in smile and the face are restored harmoniously. When all modifications are completed & the ideal result is accomplished, the transitional restorations navigate the fabrication of the final restorations.
- Acrylic templates/indices can be molded from the transitional restorations and be used as a surgical guide during placement of implants. Thus, implants are safely inserted inside the occlusal envelope of the projected prosthetic restorations. Such an optimal implant placement is considered of major significance, the aesthetics and function being highly facilitated and extra costs being eliminated.
- They foster immediate loading of implants
- They are also essential at surgical procedures both pre-operatively for the evaluation of the volume of tissues to be grafted and post-operatively, during the healing time , for the contouring of the outline of healing tissues.
- Their greatest value is addressed in reconstructing the worn dentition. In such cases, trial period is extended and includes multiple occlusal modifications. Therefore final restorations are faithfully replicated out of the transitionals
- They protect the teeth;supports from microbes and thermal stimuli
- The functionality and appearance of the mouth is improved in one day (one-day dentistry)
- They transfer all the information obtained from the sensory analysis to the teeth
- They are a basic treatment of prosthodontology and periodontology, because they help us to maintain the morphology of the gums and teeth.
- They are a basic stage of occlusion therapy, since they allow the delivery of the correct occlusion regimen
- Guide healing after plastic surgery of the gums and/or tooth extractions
- They allow easy modification of the shape and morphology of the new dental composition by adding or removing their construction material (acrylic/composite resin)
- They promote controlled cutting of dental tissues (minimally invasive dentistry) and reduce the possibility of unnecessary endodontic treatments – debridements
- Accurately reproduce in the final restorations – with the help of appropriate navigators/guides – the result we have modelled and achieved in the transitional restorations
In the case of removal anterior tooth/teeth, grind at the same appointment the post teeth and build a temporary bridge. The bridge is placed in place, immediately restores the fresh (empty) area and allows for aesthetic shaping of the periodontal tissues. We can thus direct healing to the area of extraction, in order to achieve harmony, naturalness and visual “emergence” of the prosthetic teeth through the gums. A special category of real estate transition bridges are the Maryland/Rochette-type temporary bridges. These are bonded bridges, which are placed on teeth WITHOUT cutting/grinding. Such an option is usually applied to adolescents with congenital missing teeth. In this case the adjacent healthy teeth are not grinded, but they are used to bond a porcelain prosthetic (“false”) tooth to them, which will remain in place until adulthood, when a dental implant will be placed. Simply put, the patient comes in with bad teeth and leaves with new ”teeth” in one day
Temporary veneers, crowns-cases are fabricated pre-operatively and bonded with temporary paste to the teeth after the session is completed. Materials of choice for temporary crowns are acrylic resin or composite resins. 1 session is required to build a temporary restoration. The final cost depends on the material and method of construction. Without appropriate transitional restorations it is impossible to achieve a perfect final prosthetic restoration.
